Daytona 500 Weather

There are some clouds a’brewing for the Daytona 500. And I don’t mean psychologically, but rather weather-wise. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 PM EST, so while the current weather at the time of this writing is cloudy and 64 degrees F according to weather.com, raceweather.net says the following:

A band of showers is northwest of Daytona and should move over the area within the next hour. However, that should also clear out by noon. The next area of showers that is associated with the stationary front lying across Daytona is now across of the Florida Panhandle. The forecast models show this approaching Daytona near sunset, i.e., the end of the race.

Based on that, it looks like the Daytona 500, at least around start time, should be fine weather-wise.

Rain Cuts Daytona 500 Short

Rain spread into Daytona Beach in the evening and caused the race to be cut short with 48 laps still to go. Periodic rain is expected to continue through the early part of the night. Farther north, cold air in place over the mid-Atlantic will allow for some snow over portions of North Carolina and Virginia into Monday morning.

Most of the rain lingering over northern and central Florida tonight will be moving offshore of the east coast by early Monday morning. While Florida dries out, a disturbance moving into the mid-Atlantic will be supporting some wet snowflakes in North Carolina and southern Virginia.

Rain and wet snow showers will be developing west to east across portions of North Carolina and Virginia through the overnight hours and then quickly taper off Monday morning. Any accumulating snow is expected to be restricted to the mountains, while any snow that falls farther east across the piedmont and coastal plain will likely melt on paved surfaces.

The next potentially major storm system to affect the Southeast is expected to arrive Tuesday into Wednesday of this upcoming week. This storm could spark a round of severe thunderstorms from the southern Plains to the Deep South and interior Southeast late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Michelle Obama’s Vogue Cover

It’s official: Following much speculation, First Lady Michelle Obama will grace the cover of Vogue’s March issue. The magazine hits newsstands on February 24th.

Obama was interviewed by Vogue Editor-at-Large André Leon Talley and photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

According to the AP:
Every first lady since Lou Hoover — save Bess Truman — has been featured in the high-fashion magazine, but Mrs. Obama is only the second to grace the cover. She appears wearing a magenta silk sheath dress by Jason Wu, who also designed her inaugural gown.

First Lady Michelle Obama appears on the March cover of Vogue, becoming one of two first ladies to be pictured on the famed cover, along with Hillary Clinton.

In the cover photo, taken by Annie Leibovitz, Obama is leaning on a soft beige sofa at the Hay-Adams Hotel, where the first family stayed days before the historic inauguration. Obama is wearing a magenta dress by Jason Wu, who designed her inaugural ball gown. Her right hand rests under her chin. Her left hand folded beneath her. She is wearing a diamond that you do not often see her wearing in recent appearances. Behind her, light streams in between curtains.

Inside, a photograph shows her in a black dress by designer Narciso Rodriguez. She is standing in front of open French doors. Outside is Lafayette Park and in the distance you can barely see the White House, the seat of power. Behind her are the props of her profession: a laptop, a cup of coffee or more likely tea. A notepad, a pen. A folded newspaper. She is tethered to work by an old-fashioned telephone, the spiral cord stretched, the receiver at her right ear. She is not talking. She is either listening or on hold.

Starting with Lou Hoover, Herbert Hoover’s wife, first ladies have been photographed for Vogue, but those photos have often appeared inside where they are well placed, not quite hidden, but not quite having the oomph of being featured out front.

“It’s the second time a first lady has appeared on cover of Vogue,” says Vogue spokesman Patrick O’Connell. The two Obama “portraits were commissioned. They were taken by Annie Leibovitz at the Hay-Adams in January.” The cover story is written by Vogue editor-at-large, Andre Leon Talley.

In the article, Obama tells Talley that she is settling in, trying to find a church to join and help her daughters get adjusted. “I’m going to try to take them to school every morning — as much as I can,” she tells Talley. “But there’s also a measure of independence. And obviously there will be times I won’t be able to drop them off at all. I like to be a presence in my kids’ school. I want to know the teacher; I want to know the other parents.”

Rihanna Herpes Rumor: Chris Brown STDs FALSE

Did Chris Brown give Rihanna herpes? Is this the reason for the high-profile couples breakup and recent incident of violence leading to his arrest? The answer appears to be no, and no. The rumors sweeping the internet are lacking credibility, but that hasn’t stopped some gossip sites from reporting on them.

Media  Takeout has done a good job of reporting on the incident Sunday night before the Grammy Awards show in which they both canceled their appearances at the last minute. Turns out the reason was for alleged domestic violence in which Chris Brown allegedly hit Robyn Fenty, whose stage name is Rihanna herself.

But herpes? The bottom line, they say, is the rumor is false as they attempt to set

Chris did not punch Rihanna in her face because she gave him herpes. This rumor is floating around the net and it’s A LIE. Chris saw the cold sore just like the rest of us weeks ago – and it didn’t stop him from messing with her. This story is nothing to joke about. Domestic violence is a serious subject, and Chris Brown is facing serious charges – we shouldn’t make up fake ish about this situation

But others continue to report on the gossip which has even prompted mentions on talk radio stations in the country. Once a genie gets out of a bottle, it is hard to put her back. So we hear from the Inquisitr in Australia:

Sources allegedly close to Brown allege that the fight leading to the domestic violence incident occurred because Rihanna gave Chris Brown herpes.

And how did Rihanna end up with an STD to begin with? Claims are that she picked it up from Jay-Z!

Tom Joyner, who has a nationally syndicated radio broadcast out of Atlanta’s Kiss 104.1, added the reason that Brown is mad at the Barbados singer for giving him and STD.

The drama in the Chris Brown Rihanna assault continues as media reports have confirmed that it really was Rihanna that the “With You” hit maker beat up. However, it is the alleged reason behind the beating that is taking center stage at the moment. Reports around the web have quoted anonymous sources close the Chris Brown alleging that the cause of the domestic violence was that Rihanna gave Chris brown herpes! Yes, that’s right, herpes as in STD. What a shocker! If you fell off your chair with that one, be ready for more. And where did Rihanna get this disease? Allegedly, Rihanna got the herpes from Jay-Z! (You can faint now). Still, that’s no reason to beat her up.

Meanwhile, reports around the web have described the injuries suffered by Rihanna during the domestic violence. Insider accounts have described the injuries as horrific, with Rihanna bruised on both side of her face (Rihanna black eye) - devastating proof of physical abuse. Here’s an excerpt from a TMZ report:

Law enforcement sources have now gotten specific with us… police took pictures of Rihanna’s injuries and they are “horrific.”

As we reported, the photos show major contusions on both sides of the singer’s face — there is serious swelling and bruising. Her lip is split and her nose bloody. We have now confirmed there are bite marks on one of her arms and on several fingers.

No official statements have yet been issued from both camps. Although there are many reports such as these all over the web, none of them have been officially confirmed as the Rihanna and Chris Brown camps are keeping quiet about it. Tune in for more.

Small earthquake strikes central New Jersey

Authorities say a small earthquake has struck central New Jersey, rattling windows and alarming residents of several communities.

Won-Young Kim, a seismologist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, N.Y., says a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 3.0 was recorded at 10:34 p.m. Monday, centered in the Morris County communities of Rockaway, Dover and Morris Plains.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Quakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3 are the smallest that can generally be felt by people.

Police say the quake triggered a flood of 911 calls, with residents reporting a sound like an explosion and houses shaking.

Kim says small earthquakes are not unusual in that area of New Jersey.

Michael Phelps Issues Apology After Bong Hit Photo Surfaces

Michael Phelps was compelled to issue an apology after a photograph surfaced in tabloid News of the World which showed the 14-time Olympic gold-medaller using a bong.

The NYT: “In a statement, the United States Olympic Committee said it was ‘disappointed in the behavior recently exhibited by Michael Phelps,’ describing him as a role model who was ‘well aware of the responsibilities and accountability that come with setting a positive example for others, particularly young people.’ … Under the current World Anti-Doping Agency code, cannabis is not considered a banned substance during out-of-competition testing. Athletes face suspension only if they test positive for it at a competition.”

Said Michael Phelps in a statement: “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment. I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

Athletes, Stars Speak Out on Michael Phelps Bong Brouhaha

Much like the lingering aroma from a pungent cloud of pot smoke, the controversy over Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps‘ bong photo is not dissipating easily.

The 23-year-old Phelps—who racked up a record eight gold medals at last summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing, China—was forced to apologize after British tabloid News of the World published a photo of him appearing to take a hit off a bong over the weekend.

And while both the International Olympic Committee, and Phelps’ sponsors Omega and Speedo have cut the athlete some slack on the matter, the athletic community itself is now weighing in with varying opinions.

Michael Phelps‘ Olympic teammates have quickly paddled to the swimmer’s defense, reports Us Magazine. Dara Torres, the 41-year-old swimmer who took home three silver medals from the Beijing Olympics, told the Associated Press, “This in no way, shape or form diminishes anything [Phelps has] done…It’s sort of a double-edged sword.”

She continues, “When you’re recognizable, you’re looked up to as a role model. He is recognizable, and everything you do gets looked at and picked apart. I guess that’s the price of winning 14 Olympic medals.”

Jason Lezak, a member of the USA’s Olympic 400-meter relay team, was more cautious in his support for his former teammate.

“While I don’t condone his conduct, I am a teammate and fan,” Lezak related to the AP via a text message. “Unlike many fair-weather people, I am sticking by him. If my wife and I can help him in any way, we will. I believe he will grow from this and be better person, role model and teammate.”

Even pop-rocker John Mayer chimed in today by Twittering, “Glad Phelps’ sponsors are sticking with him. We often have completely incongruous expectations for other people’s humanity vs our own.”

Coming from the other end of the spectrum is Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal. The 36-year-old NBA star and law-and-order advocate—who was sworn in as a reserve police officer for the Miami Police Department in 2005, while playing for the Miami Heat—was predictably disappointed by the news.

“Say it aint so what im reading about michael phelps,” O’Neal twittered today, “is this real?”

Funny, that was the same question many theater-goers asked themselves after watching Shaq’s 1996 cinematic effort, Kazaam.
